Key Stage 2 Geography "Working Rivers"
A full day at the North Mill (approx. 9.30 to 2.30) covering the use of water power and its impact.
Programme:
Walk looking at how the water power from the River Derwent was managed and follow the water course into the mill
Discuss why water power was used and what needed to come together to make it successful
Look at the impact working rivers had on peoples lives, bringing in the factory system
LUNCH BREAK
Time to explore the shop if time allows
Walk around the factory community, looking at the infrastructure required to attract workers
See the impact of the railway on the town
See how the landscape of the town changed.
Key Stage 2 - "Victorians"
A day at the North Mill (approx 9:30 to 2:30) covering most subjects within the national curriculum.
Programme:
Dress in Victorian working clothes and experience the working day of a Mill Child.
Discover what powered the mill and why.
What changes did the railway bring?
See original Machinery - e.g. Arkwright's Water Frame.

Handling collection - Examine and discuss Victorian artifacts

We look at the paternalistic attitude of the Strutt family and the way in which the towns people were influenced and compare this with the townspeople today.

Students must remain with their group during the visit and school staff are responsible for the welfare and behaviour of students at all times
Prices
Half day in mill is £2 per student, full day £4 no extra charges
Cost for a session by our staff in schools is £50
A Victorian full day at the mill site £4 per child, all inclusive
A ratio of 1 adult to 6 KS1 children & 1 adult to 10 KS2 is required-accompanying adults free
Worksheets are available for a teacher led outdoor visit to the mill site at a nominal cost
